Norwich families to receive new clothing for free

NORWICH – The Norwich City School District and Liberty Partnership Program sponsored another year’s Holiday Clothing Program, where district families will receive new clothes free of charge.

According to Holiday Clothing Program Coordinator Kelly Colosi, the event has occurred for more than 30 years, and it serves approximately 200 families in the Norwich City School District.

Colosi said the giveaway night will take place 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. this Thursday at the SUNY Morrisville Norwich Campus. She said it will be a drive through pickup event due to the coronavirus. She added that anyone who signed up for a food voucher through the Broad Street Methodist Church can pick up their goods from 9 a.m. to noon as well.

“We really work hard to meet and to fill a need that our families have identified here in our school district,” said Colosi. “We want students to be able to go outside and play, and even just to be able to do things that others can do in the wintertime.”

“The need for winter items has increased this year, and we work really hard to use all of the funding that comes in to fill those needs.”

Colosi said while the Holiday Clothing Program currently only serves residents in the Norwich City School District, they would be happy to see it grow as the need is everywhere. She said that not as many families have taken advantage of the event this year, and that they can still sign up until this Wednesday.

“Normally families are mailed home a letter, but with COVID everything went online,” she added. “It’s been a change for families this year, and we can still work to meet the needs of families if they call no later than Wednesday.”

She said families may still call (607) 334-5144 ext. 5036 until Wednesday, December 16, with requests if clothing is needed. She added that the event will generally cover a new outfit for every child in a home, and if possible it will also cover winter jackets, hats, and gloves as well.

Colosi added that some of the program’s donors include Broad Street Methodist Church, Raymond Corp, Walmart, Rotary, the Emmanuel Episcopal Church, NBT, and the longest standing of the donors, the RC Smith Foundation.

“We also have a number of people that reached out to help fellow families in need,” she said.

Fellow Holiday Clothing Program Coordinator, Stacy Wilcox, also spoke about the event and said event representatives start requesting donations usually about mid-October, and typically start packing giveaway bags the week before Christmas break before school.

“We usually do a new outfit for every child in the home up to age 18, and if we can do it we do winter jackets and hats and gloves too,” said Wilcox. “The program has a history for working with community organizations to help make this happen.”

“This year we’ll be packing in a very large space, we’ll be wearing our masks the whole time, and washing hands frequently.”
