CHENANGO –The American Welding Society (AWS) recognized DCMO BOCES Welding Program student James Hill, with a scholarship to complete his Career and Technical Education program at the Chenango Campus. Hill is an adult student who received his GED in 2006 and struggled with finding his career passion. “I held many jobs and did many things. I discovered that I had a passion for welding and after investing in a welder, I decided to join the BOCES program to achieve higher welding certifications and quality standards.
Jaan Aarismaa, Welding Instructor at BOCES, commented on the alignment with the American Welding Society’s vision to help develop outstanding welders. “Hill exemplifies the character and commitment of successful students. He strives to achieve high standards and applies learned skills with a great deal of responsibility. We expect Hill to be very successful,” said Arismaa.
Hill enrolled in the DCMO BOCES Entrepreneur Academy to prepare for his small business venture. His new business, James’ Welding and Fabrication in Oxford New York provide fabrication and repair welding services for most metals. According to Hill, quality of work is what counts, “I want to give customers great service and value. My goal is to deliver the best possible quality of workmanship and to retain customers for a long time,” said Hill.
He shared his appreciation for the advanced skills training he received at BOCES, “My instructor, Mr. Aaarismaa was an amazing inspiration. He was so enthusiastic and encouraged me to further my skills. Instead of holding me back with beginner projects, he allowed me to work on senior assignments giving me compliments for achieving the higher standards,” said Hill.
The scholarship from the American Welding Society (AWS) helped Hill pay for his technical education program. AWS is the worldwide authority in the development of standards, certifications, and educational programming for the welding community. The organization is committed to connecting the welding industry to an extensive collection of resources. Through the support of generous donors, AWS awards 2 million in scholarship grants. These awards help students further their education, add skills training, and support career initiatives in welding or related fields.
Career and Technical Director Jennifer Waite celebrated Hill’s achievements by saying, “There are multiple career pathways from college to jobs. Our CTE students transition to exciting work opportunities. James’ new journey into business ownership helps us validate the value of our new Entrepreneur Academy opening doors to career destinations in business ownership. We wish James’ business prosperity.”
The Entrepreneur Academy’s next program begins on January 5, 2020. Alumni profiles and Entrepreneur Academy programs will be posted at the BOCES website at www.dcmoboces.com/ENTREPRENEURACADEMY.
