CHENANGO COUNTY – In early December, Chenango County completed the installation of two Ultra 96% efficient boilers in the 1990 Wing of the County Office Building; replacing piping, fittings, valves and controls, and integrating new control software throughout the building.

County officials said the goal of the project was to make the Chenango County Office Building more cost-effective and to offer the ability to control zones more effectively and efficiently for even greater energy savings.

Officials said Chenango County was designated a Clean Energy Community in February 2019, after completing four of the ten high impact actions identified by the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) as part of its Clean Energy Communities Program.

They said the designation allowed the Chenango County Planning Department the opportunity to apply for a grant up to $150,000 toward an additional clean energy project, with no local cost share.

According to Director of Planning for Chenango County Shane Butler, ultimately, the Chenango County Board of Supervisors chose a project pitched by the County Public Facilities Department.

“We asked various County Departments if they had any large energy related projects where the County could cut down on energy use and save some Green House Gas (GHG) emissions,” said Butler. “We received six different project ideas.”

Chenango County Director of Public Facilities Julie Gates also spoke on the energy proposal, and said the project was a multiagency effort.

“The project ended up costing just under $150,000, has an estimated annual energy savings of 1,103.95 MMbtu/year, and reduces GHG emissions by 58.63 tons per year. It really was a great project for us,” said Gates. “Special thank you to Terry Carroll, Energy Educator from Cornell Cooperative Extension – Tompkins County for his assistance throughout, and to the Planning Department for applying and for organizing the effort.”

Funding was made available as part of the $16 million Clean Energy Communities Initiative, which launched in August 2016.
