Grand jury indicts for murder and several other violent crimes

CHENANGO COUNTY – A number of people were indicted for violent felonies in December including one case of second degree murder involving the shooting of a Sherburne man.

Kelly Gillett, 36, of Johnson City, was indicted with second degree murder for allegedly using a 20-gauge shotgun to murder her boyfriend inside a home at 7 Gould Drive in the Village of Sherburne on Oct. 19.

According to the Chenango County Sheriff's Office Gillett dialed 911 at about 11 a.m. to report the shooting. Police said she later told officers she was responsible for the killing and said she needed a lawyer. She pleaded not guilty in Town of Sherburne Court soon after.

The victim, 39-year-old Jonathan Ryan, is a father of three children, all of them from a previous relationship. Sheriff investigators said none of the children were at the home at the time of the shooting and were staying at a separate residence.

Other individuals facing felony indictments are charged with crimes including rape, criminal sex acts, and drug sales.

Chris P. Wood was indicted for first-degree rape, a class B felony following an investigation by police in the City of Norwich.

According to the indictment, on November 8 Wood forcibly engaged in sexual intercourse with a victim.

Robert C. Browne was indicted for two counts of first-degree criminal sex act, class B felonies, second-degree criminal sex act, a class D felony, first-degree endangering the welfare of an incompetent or physically disabled person, a class E felony.

Browne’s indictment states that on a day between September 27 and October 7 while in the City of Norwich, Browne engaged in sexual conduct with another person without their consent.

It states that another incident occurred on October 6 in the City of Norwich, and that Browne engaged in oral sexual conduct with another person who was unable to consent.

Phillip W. Kasmarcik was indicted on third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony.

On June 25 in the City of Norwich Kasmarcik allegedly possessed one or more preparations, compounds, mixtures, or substances containing methamphetamine or its byproducts with the intent to sell it.

It is alleged that Kasmarcik worked with another individual with the intent to see it, and that the weight of the meth was approximately 13.6 grams.

Jason R. Lowe was incited on third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony.

According to Lowe’s indictment, on June 9 in the Town of Norwich, Lowe possessed one or more preparations, compounds, mixtures, or substances containing methamphetamine or its byproducts with a weight of approximately 3.6 grams.

Brenon Strozier was indicted on third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony.

The indictment states that on July 29 in the Town of Norwich Strozier possessed one or more preparations, compounds, mixtures, or substances containing methamphetamine or its byproducts with the intent to sell it.

It states that the meth had a weight of approximately 10.8 grams.

Robert E. Straight was indicted on two counts of third-degree possession of a controlled substance, class B felonies.

Straight’s indictment states that on June 27 while in the Town of Preston, Straight possessed numerous “small bags” of heroin and a “large bag” of fentanyl with the intent to sell it.

Deidra A. Butler was indicted on third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony.

On July 21 while in the Town of Plymouth, Butler allegedly possessed one or more preparations, compounds, mixtures, or substances containing methamphetamine or its byproducts with the intent to sell it.

Butler’s indictment states that there was approximately 6.4 grams of meth collected in the investigation.

Bret J. Eccleston was indicted on third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a class B felony.

According to Eccleston’s indictment, on May 22 while in the Town of Norwich, Eccleston possessed one or more preparations, compounds, mixtures, or substances containing methamphetamine or its byproducts with the intent to sell it.

It states the meth had an approximate weight of 4.1 grams.

Norman R. Prosser, Jr was indicted on aggravated driving while intoxicated and driving while intoxicated, class E felonies.

Prosser allegedly drove a 2003 Ford F-150 on October 13 in the Town of North Norwich with a blood alcohol content of .22 percent.

Joseph M. Titsworth was indicted for failure to register or verify as a sex offender, a class D felony.

According to Titsworth’s indictment, on May 28 while in the City of Norwich, Titsworth failed to register a change in address within 10 days of moving.
