Nail salon in Norwich catches fire
NORWICH – Star Nails in the Town of Norwich caught fire on Sunday night and officials said they are investigating it as an electrical fire.
According to City of Norwich Fire Department Chief Jan Papelino, a 911 call was received at 9:22 p.m. Sunday night at Star Salon. The business was located on NY-12 in the Town of Norwich, next to Burger King.
“Fortunately there's a hydrant located right between Star Salon and Burger King which made for an easy hand lay for supply lines,” said Papelino. “There was quite a bit of smoke coming from the ease when we got there.”
Papelino said it took firefighters approximately four minutes to arrive on scene, and upon arrival responders started to put out the fire after entering through the front door.
“When they got inside they saw the fire was pretty well contained to one room,” Papelino added. “There was a clear v-shaped pattern from an outlet, which implies that it was an electrical fire.”
“The fire had spread through the wall, but was extinguished without a large amount of water being used.”
He said shortly after arrival mutual aid arrived from North Norwich and Oxford, and their help was greatly appreciated. He added that Plymouth was on standby if more assistance was required.
“Route 12 was open, we didn’t need to shut it down at that time,” said Papelino. “We cleared the scene around two hours later at about 11:30 p.m.”
“They had done some reconfiguring of the building to meet with social distancing guidelines, and everything was covered in soot.”
Papelino said Star Nails has been around for nearly 10 years, and based on the extent of the smoke damage furniture in the business would likely have to be professionally decontaimined.
“Most of the damage to the building was smoke damage as most of the fire damage was contained to a single room,” he said.
