CHENANGO COUNTY – After serving 28 years in her role as Chenango County Clerk, Mary Weidman announced that this will be her final term.

According to a signed letter from Weidman, her service as county clerk will end on December 31, 2021.

Weidman is an Oxford graduate class of 1962, and in 1994 she was elected to the office of Chenango County Clerk; making her the first female and Democrat to be elected to a Chenango County office.

In 2018 she was honored in the Oxford High School Hall of Distinction for her outstanding work and dedication to her community over her more than 50 years of public service.

In her retirement letter, Weidman wrote that since 1798, there have been thirty County Clerks and at the end at the end of December this year she will complete election for seven terms spanning twenty-eight years which will represent the longest service for all Chenango Clerks.

“It has been my honor and pleasure to represent Chenango County as the first woman Chenango County Clerk, as well as serving our county since 1970, first as a caseworker in the Department of Social Services for three years, Employment and Training Director for eleven and Deputy Commissioner of Social Services for nine years,” she said. “My priority has always been providing effective public service to our residents and training staff which reflect the same idea.”

“In my opinion, public service can and should represent the most important purpose to make people’s lives better, always with an eye for effective communication of government purpose.”

She said the county clerk is responsible for a variety of tasks including maintaining the permanent land and public records of Chenango County, serving as the Clerk of the County and Supreme Court for filing of civil papers and maintenance of criminal records, maintaining the partnership with New York State Department of Motor Vehicles for local operations, Chief Notary of the County, Records Management Officer, as well as processing pistol permits, military vendor permits and United States passports.

“I look forward to retirement and will certainly look to supporting the search for a successor with the leadership skills who will continue the professional and personal service which this office must represent,” she added.
