NORWICH – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office recently announced that their jail is once again COVID-19 free thanks to a multistep action plan and dedicated staff.
According to Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting, the sheriff’s office had approximately 15 positive coronavirus cases following several exposures in one of the jail pods. Cutting said the office was COVID free for 10-and-a-half months prior to the outbreak, and hopefully they will continue on that trend again.
“We had a mini-outbreak after one of the pods started having positive coronavirus test results,” said Cutting. “Three out of the four people in that pod tested positive, and it began to spread.”
“Staff members started to test positive as well, and we put a plan into action to separate anyone who had been exposed.”
Cutting said anyone on staff who displayed symptoms was sent home to quarantine, and everyone else who was in jail and infected was separated into a different pod.
“We shifted the inmates that were exposed into the housing pod, and sanitized the other pods to help slow the spread,” he said. “We also went to emergency management and purchased rapid testing kits to try and get people diagnosed as quickly as possible.”
“Within just a short time we got results back, and tests consistently for weeks until we were clear.”
He added that the jail has been COVID-19 free for about four weeks, and with continued testing and vigilance they hope to keep it that way.
“We went about 10-and-a-half months COVID free, and I’m really happy with that,” said Cutting. “I’m happy that everyone has recovered and that there were no hospitalizations or major health complications.”
“We were also fortunate that we had space to isolate the individuals who were infected, so we could shift the inmates and staff to that pod and keep everyone else safe.”
Cutting said the hard work and dedication of staff members allowed the jail to return to its COVID-free status, and they will continue to do everything they can to keep the public safe to the best of their abilities.
