United Way supports 16 new programs thanks to COVID-19 fundraising

CHENANGO COUNTY – After raising more than $138,000 for their COVID-19 Relief Fund, Chenango United Way has been able to help 25 organizations, 16 of which they have never assisted with programs in the past.

According to Chenango United Way Executive Director Elizabeth Monaco, the need for COVID-19 related funds is still high even though the main fundraising campaign has ended. Monaco said there were 29 calls from families in need of food over this past weekend, which is a record high for them, and that their COVID-19 relief fund will remain open.

“We recently received a $10,000 contribution from NBT to our COVID-19 relief fund, which is a continued display of their incredible generosity and love for the community,” said Monaco. “We are still continuing to accept and use coronavirus related donations because the need is still here.”

“A lot of people think that all of the COVID funding is going towards the same organizations that we already fund, but it isn’t.”

She said 16 of the 25 organizations that have been funded out of the COVID relief funds are completely new to Chenango United Way funding. She added that 19 organizations are also funded using the regular campaign money.

“We’re really excited to be working with these organizations that we’ve never been able to fund before,” said Monaco. “We typically wouldn’t be working with them, but because of COVID-19 they have a need that we can help with using this fund.”

“One example of a new partnership is with the Children’s Home Wyoming Conference. It’s not just them though, we’re getting a lot of requests to help with remote learning needs and emotional and social assistance from educators all over the county.”

Monaco said people are struggling with a lot of anxiety and stress after dealing with COVID for so long. She said still, the community has shown incredible generosity and the fight goes on.

“The community was extremely generous with the campaign, and they’ve been tremendously generous with this COVID response fund and we need that to continue,” she added. “We don’t know when the COVID pandemic is going to be over with, so we need to continue to be ready to help our community.”

“We really appreciate all of the support from the community, and we’re going to continue to try and do our best to help the people struggling in Chenango County.

Contributions may be mailed to the Chenango United Way, Attn: COVID-19 Response Fund, 83 N. Broad St., Front Suite, Norwich, NY 13815.
