NEW BERLIN – A Little Falls woman involved in a fatal car accident in August of 2020 is now facing felony charges after police said she had a blood alcohol content of .23 percent at the time of the accident.
According to New York State Police Troop C Public Information Officer Aga Dembinska, on January 28, 2021, Kerri L. Bunnelle, 31, of Little Falls was charged with second-degree vehicular manslaughter, first-degree aggravated unlicensed operation, and aggravated driving while intoxicated.
“Bunnelle was the driver of a GMC Envoy that crossed over into on-coming traffic on August 4, 2020 on State Highway 8 in the Town of New Berlin,” said Dembinska. “She struck a Ford Focus head-on that was being driven by Mathew R. Fredericks, age 43 of Herkimer, NY.”
“Mr. Fredericks did not survive the crash.”
Dembinska confirmed an investigation revealed that Bunnelle’s blood alcohol content was .23 percent at the time of the accident, and that she also did not possess a valid license at the time.
“We needed to wait for the bloodwork to come back before we could make an arrest,” she said. “We knew about the license, and she has been out since August.”
Dembinska said Bunnelle and her attorney responded to the state police headquarters in Sidney on January 28, 2021 where she was virtually arraigned in the Town of Norwich Court and released on her own recognizance.
“At the time of the accident Bunnelle was transported to Saint Elizabeth Medical Center in Utica by Sherburne EMS,” said Dembinska. “New Berlin Fire also responded to the scene and NYS DOT assisted with traffic control.”
“State Highway 8 between Route 80 and County Route 25 was closed during the investigation for approximately five hours.”
She is scheduled to appear in the Chenango County Court at a later date.
