Construction on the New Berlin Firehouse continues as officials seek $150k shortfall
An initial community forum held in the summer of 2019 where New Berlin officials, project engineers and volunteer firemen made a presentation on why they need a new firehouse, and how they intend to spend $900,000 in donations and funds on the $1.5 million project. NEW BERLIN – The Village of New Berlin will ask residents to approve an additional $150,000 in costs to move ahead with a nearly $1.5 million project to build a new downtown community center and firehouse.
Village of New Berlin officials have announced that they will hold a permissive referendum regarding their firehouse project and ways they will cover a $150,000 gap while they wait to hear about a grant.
The funds are part of a larger project to build a new community center and fire house. First announced in 2019 the project has raised about $1 million to help fund the effort to replace the 50-year-old existing firehouse nearby, which has suffered a number of issues in recent years.
According to Village of New Berlin Clerk Kelly Anderson, construction on the project has continued, and they are still able to get the grant, but want to ensure all of the bills are covered in the meantime.
In village documents Anderson notes that the decision for the permissive referendum was made on February 9th. They state that the village has approved upwards of $1,550,000 towards the construction of the new firehouse.
The documents state that $150,000 of the cost of construction was intended to be covered by a grant from Senator James Seward's Office but a contract has not yet been received.
“The project is nearing completion and the contractors will be submitting final bills and monies will need to be reallocated to cover these expenses,” said Anderson. “In recognition of these needs, funds in the amount of $108,780 currently resides in the Fire Department equipment reserves, of which the Village board has determined $50,000 can be diverted to the Firehouse and Community Center project.”
She said the village board authorized her to spend up to $50,000 from the General Fund Capital Reserve Fund if needed for the project.
The motion to adopt the resolution was made by Michelle Priola, was seconded by Carol Riley, Dave Smith and Mayor Terry Potter also voted yes.
The project was first announced in 2019 and is supported by a mix of corporate donations from local employers as well as support from the State of New York, collectively providing nearly $1 million to help fund the construction effort. The structure will replace the existing firehouse nearby that was built in 1971.
Design for the new 7,000 square-foot firehouse includes six garage bays, offices and separate rooms for gear, meetings, training and storage. The new structure will help the department continue to serve the village and surrounding areas.
The 2,400 square-foot community center will contain a kitchen area and large gathering space so that the fire department as well as local residents and businesses can host events.
Village of New Berlin Mayor Terry Potter didn’t respond about the potential grant funding before the press deadline.
