Marauders take down Panthers 57-51
SHERBURNE – The Sherburne-Earlville boys varsity basketball team picked up their first win on the season as they downed the Panthers of Edmeston 57-51.
The Marauder defense was much improved as they held Edmeston to 10 and 14 points apiece in the opening two quarters. Meanwhile, Brock Weidman, Robert Hill and Taylor Gryzmkowski took turns being the epicenter of the Sherburne-Earlville offense. Weidman scored 13 points in the opening half, Hill followed right behind with nine points while Gryzmkowski scored eight points- six of which came from beyond the arc. Heading into second half of basketball, S-E led 35-24.
“We played well in spurts, especially in the second part of the second quarter” said Sherburne-Earlville Head Coach Kevin Vibbard, “Zach Trass did a really good job on Josh Martin.”
The third quarter proved pivotal to the Edmeston comeback. Coming out from the half-time break, Edmeston proceeded to score their highest point total of the night with 15 points in the period. The Panther’s Josh Martin pitched in five points- including one trifecta, with teammate Colin McEnroe scoring eight markers of his own in the period.
Entering the final eight minutes of play, S-E led 46-39. Edmeston may have seen a small opening to make the game a bit more interesting for the Marauders down the stretch, but the Sherburne-Earlville defense would have none of it. “We played much better team defense tonight, than we did the other night” added Vibbard,
Improving upon their play as of late, S-E stressed the pressure on the Edmeston guards with Zach Trass leading the defensive charge, as the Marauders went on to win 57-51.
Robert Hill led S-E in scoring with 22 and Brock Weidman pitched in 13 points of his own.
Edmeston recorded three double-digit scorers as Josh Martin led with 19 points on the night, Colin McEnroe added 16 points, and Greg Devries tossed in 11 points of his own.
Sherburne-Earlville (1-1) travels tonight to take on the Unadilla Valley Storm in New Berlin with tip-off scheduled for 5:30pm.
