NORWICH – The first doses of the newly approved Janssen COVID-19 vaccine to be given in Chenango County were administered Thursday at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital in Norwich.

The single-dose vaccine, developed by Johnson & Johnson, received emergency use authorization from the Food & Drug Administration on February 27.

“This is another historic day in the fight against COVID-19 for both our hospital and community,” said David Finney, RN, Vice President of Clinical Services at the Norwich hospital.

According to Finney, UHS Chenango Memorial received their first allocation of the single-dose vaccine on Wednesday, as did its sister UHS facilities in Broome County.

Finney and his vaccine planning team wasted no time in their efforts to ensure the doses could be administered both in accordance with New York State’s direction for their use, and within the seven day timeframe.

“The guidance we received for this allocation does differ from how we were directed to use our past allocations,” he said.

Until now, healthcare workers and others eligible in Phase 1a have been the priority for hospitals such as UHS Chenango Memorial, per the direction received from the state. Any additional doses could be used for adults 65 and older.

“With this allocation, the state has directed us to make inpatient discharges – specifically patients who are either over 65 or who have qualifying health conditions who are being discharged from the hospital – our first priority.” the hospital administrator said. “Any remaining doses must be administered to individuals who are 65 and over.”

According to Finney, the hospital currently has several hundred area residents on a waiting list. They are reaching out to people on that list by email and phone as vaccine appointments become available. To be added to the list, those 65 and older can call (607) 337-4888 or email their name, address, phone number and eligibility to cmh.vax@nyuhs.org.

Some have questioned the efficacy of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine versus the previously authorized Moderna and Pfizer vaccines, both of which require two doses.

Thesea Pelzel Poklemba, PharmD, the supervising pharmacist at UHS Chenango Memorial Hospital, responded to those concerns.

“If you have the opportunity to receive any one of these three vaccines, you should take it,” she said. “While they are all a little different, they each provide valuable protection against COVID-19. Just like the flu vaccine, it may not prevent you 100% from getting the virus, but all three have proved themselves highly effective in preventing moderate to severe symptoms and hospitalizations related to the disease.”
