Tornado Girls takedown Elmira; Fall to Cambridge

ELMIRA – In what normally is a semi-final or championships match-up for the Southern Tier Athletic Conference Championship, the Norwich Purple Tornado dismantled the Elmira Express on Thursday March 4th 60-48.
Both teams jockeyed for position during the first three quarters of play with the Tornado ultimately creating separation from the Express in the final eight minutes to play. Emily Evans had kept the Purple Tornado offensive machine moving in the right direction for most of the game as Express defenders couldn’t contain her, as Evans scored 18 points through the first three period of play.
In the fourth, Norwich’s Abby Hansen and Sydney Coggins each cashed in on trifectas at the right time for the Tornado offense as Elmira’s usually dynamic offense failed to keep pace with the run and gun Norwich tempo.
With the victory over Elmira the Purple Tornado claimed their sixth win on the year, with their focus set on their final game of the season against the 2019 New York State Class ‘C’ Champion Cambridge Indians.
CAMBRIDGE- The Lady Tornado basketball team was back in action on Saturday March 8th when they traveled to take on the 2019 New York State Class ‘C’ Champion Cambridge Indians for their final game of the 2020-2021 basketball season, with the Indians coming out on top 70-53.
The first quarter belonged to Cambridge’s Lilly Phillips who took control from the opening-tip scoring 10 points. But despite the Indian’s best efforts in the first-half the Tornado refused to go away with Cambridge leading 29-19 at the break.
The pivotal moment in the game was in the third quarter when Cambridge’s Lilly Phillips, Sophie Phillips and Stasia Epler combined for 18 of their teams’ 24 points in the eight minute span as the Indian’s pulled away from the Purple Tornado, creating a 20 point lead entering the fourth period.
Sydney Coggins led Norwich in scoring with 13 points with teammate Abby Hansen chipping in 10 points.
Lilly Phillips and Stasia Epler both scored 19 points, Sophie Phillips scored 14 and McKayla McLenitman scored 11 markers of her own.
The Lady Tornado finish their season with a 6-3 record.
