Sherburne-Earlville – Earlville found its offense in the third quarter.
Cooperstown countered with 6-foot-8 John Kennedy scoring bucket after bucket.
Kennedy matched Sherburne-Earlville's 16-point third-quarter output on his own, and he finished with a game-high 31 points in the Hawkeyes' 69-44 boys' basketball victory at Cooperstown Tuesday night.
"He was definitely a man among boys tonight," said Sherburne-Earlville coach Kevin Vibbard of Kennedy.
As a sophomore, Kennedy was a key contributor in Cooperstown's 2019 New York State Class C championship run earning individual all-state honors.
On this evening, Kennedy was particularly effective on the offensive glass netting most of his third-quarter points on putbacks off offensive rebounds.
"We could have done a better job of boxing out," Vibbard said. "But at the same time, (Kennedy's) a big boy."
S-E (3-4) fell into a deep hole in the opening half.
After scoring the game's initial bucket, the Marauders went scoreless the remainder of the opening stanza. A nine-point offering in the second quarter set the stage for more consistent offense in the second half, but at that point, the Hawkeyes were in command leading 32-11 at the break.
"We made our first shot, and we had many good looks in the first quarter," Vibbard said. "We just couldn't make anything.
"Then we got a little discouraged, and Kennedy was eating us up."
Brock Weidman again led the Marauders in scoring finishing with 16 points. S-E plays at Sauquoit Valley Wednesday night.
