BAINBRIDGE – An investigation into a fatal garage fire in Bainbridge has revealed that a man passed away last Friday following an explosion, and police said there doesn’t appear to be any foul play in the incident at this time.
According to New York State Troop C Public Information Officer Aga Dembinska, at 3:32 p.m. on Friday, March 5 New York State Police at Sidney and members of the Bureau of Criminal Investigation responded to a fatal garage fire in the Town of Bainbridge.
While the fire was in an attached garage, Dembinska said the home wasn’t lost. She said unfortunately Lloyd L. Darling, 87, of Bainbridge, NY passed away in the fire.
“A trooper was dispatched by Chenango County dispatch to a report of the fire in a garage on County Highway 38 called in by people passing by the address,” said Dembinska. “One person attempted to put out the flames with fire extinguishers.”
“When the trooper arrived, he used his issued fire extinguisher to put out the main fire inside the garage.”
She said the Guilford, Bainbridge and Sidney Fire Departments put the remaining fire out, and the Chenango County Fire Bureau responded to the scene to investigate the fire.
“A preliminary investigation shows that he was using acetylene torch, and neighbors had reported that they had heard an explosion around the time of the incident,” she added. “We conducted an autopsy at Lourdes Hospital and the preliminary report is showing that he died as the result of the fire with no signs of foul play.”
“The fire remains under investigation at this time.”
Dembinska said the individuals who witnessed the garage on fire and stopped to help should be commended for their actions. She said it’s not uncommon for people to see a house fire, but not report it.
“Kudos to that good Samaritan for stopping and trying to help,” she added. “During such a dark time it’s nice to see people trying to help out others.”
Representatives of The American Red Cross said volunteers from the Southern Tier Chapter of The American Red Cross provided immediate emergency financial assistance, emotional support, blankets and toiletry kits to two adults.
The assisted people will meet with caseworkers in the coming days to work on a long-term recovery plan.
