Sheriff: Drugs discovered following motorcycle chase
CHENANGO COUNTY – The Chenango County Sheriff’s Office reported that a Norwich man attempted to flee law enforcement Thursday afternoon, resulting in an accident after he lost control of his motorcycle.
According to a statement from Chenango County Sheriff Ernest Cutting, at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Thursday detectives and sheriff’s deputies attempted to stop a 2002 Suzuki motorcycle for various vehicle and traffic violations committed in the Town and City of Norwich.
Cutting said a low to moderate speed police chase took place from Norwich into the Village of Bainbridge.
“While in the Village of Bainbridge the operator lost control of the motorcycle and was involved in a motor vehicle accident. Members of the sheriff's office took the suspect, Aaron T. Wickham, age 32 into custody,” said Cutting. “AMR EMS responded to the scene where Wickham signed off and refused medical treatment.”
“He was found to be in possession of approximately two ounces of methamphetamine and more than a gram of fentanyl.”
Wickham was charged with second-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, fourth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance along with a number of traffic violations including reckless driving, failure to comply, and second-degree aggravated unlicensed operation.
Chenango County Sheriff’s Office Lieutenant Joshua Gould said Wickham has a history of interaction with law enforcement, including an incident on December 20, 2020 where Wickham fled law enforcement on a motorcycle without a license plate or driver’s license.
Gould said while Wickham was in an accident in the chase, he was arraigned Thursday evening at the Bainbridge Village Court after denying medical assistance.
“He was arraigned at the Bainbridge Village Court and is being held at the Chenango County Correctional Facility,” he said. “While we are waiting for test results to come back, it’s unlikely that we’ll be adding more charges in this case.”
