No animals injured in Town of Norwich barn fire
NORWICH – A barn fire in Norwich is being ruled as accidental by fire investigators with the origin of the fire being around an electric water heater located in the barn.
According to Norwich Fire Department Chief Jan Papelino, a 911 call was received at 9:06 p.m. on Thursday with the caller stating there was a barn on fire on Wells Road in Norwich.
“It was fully involved when I got there, there was a county highway worker who is also a fireman called it as fully involved when he got there earlier as well,” said Papelino. “It was approximately a 40x40 barn, with about seven total animals in the barn.”
“The owner had put the animals out earlier in the day, so fortunately none of the animals were hurt and no people were hurt.”
Papelino said emergency responders were on scene until about noon, and a preliminary investigation determined that the fire was accidental.
“There aren’t a lot of potential sources, and it looks like the fire started in the area of a tank heater,” he said. “The property owner kept the hay in a different barn, so they were able to rule that out.”
He added that multiple fire departments assisted on scene, and their help was greatly appreciated, including the South New Berlin, New Berlin, and North Norwich Fire Departments.
