Purple Tornado sweep away Storm in season opener
NORWICH – For the first time since the fall of 2019, the Norwich Purple Tornado and Unadilla Valley Storm girls volleyball teams hit the court to kick-off the 2021 ‘Fall 2 sports’ volleyball season. In the season opener, the Purple Tornado swept away the Storm in straight sets 25-9, 25-18 and 26-24 in Tuesday night’s volleyball action.
It was evident from the start that NHS was glad to be back competing as Norwich saw standout play from Sammi Taylor, Maddy Morris, Lauren Squires and Melissa Ramey as all four Tornado athletes found themselves either first or second in a major statistical category on the night.
Maddy Morris leading the team in assists with seven and Sammi Taylor recorded five. Lauren Squires led the team in kills on the night with nine and Melissa Ramey was the jack of all trades- delivering a team high seven aces and was second to Squires in kills with five.
“[We] have a few things to work on, mainly serve, but for the first time these girls have played in over a year I’m pleased” said Norwich head coach Shelly Alger.
“I lost six starters last year so it’s basically a new team and they seemed to mesh together very well.”
Unadilla Valley’s Makaylie Caulfield led the Storm in digs and kills with four and three respectively and teammate Kate Conway led UV in assists with three while also recording two kills.
Norwich (1-0) returns to the court on Thursday March 18th when they travel to take on the Oneonta Yellowjackets with game time set for 6:30pm.
UV (0-1) returns to action on Friday March 19th when they travel to take on the Greene Trojans.
