Purple Tornado Swimmers defeat Greene Trojans 115-30

NORWICH – The long awaited return to the pool for both the Norwich Purple Tornado and Greene Trojans varsity girls swim teams finally arrived on Tuesday March 16th as both squads opened their season, with the Tornado proving victorious 115-30.
Norwich took the top two spots in the 200 yard medley relay. The quarter of Abigail Hansen, Kaitlyn Blaisure, Tanner Olds, and Angela Carlson finished first in a time of 2:08.57. The second place squad consisted of the NHS crew Abigail Natoli, Adyson Whaley, Nina Kman and Mikayla Sastri who timed 2:18.90.
In the 200 yard freestyle, Norwich’s Julia Llewellyn finished first in a time of 2:33 while Greene’s Olivia Ketzak finished just three seconds behind to place second in the event.
Kaitlyn Blaisure took first place in the 200 Yard IM timing 2:36.13 along with taking home another number one finish in the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 1:17.79.
The Tornado’s Hansen and Sastri placed first and second respectively in the 50 yard freestyle with Hansen timing 27.88 and Sastri timing 29.54. Greene’s Skyler Nowalk finished just a split second behind in 30.81 to claim a third place finish in the race.
Norwich’s Hansen would continue her winning ways in the pool in the 100 yard freestyle taking another ‘numero uno’ finish with a time of 1:02.20 with NHS teammate Nina Kman sticking close behind in a 1:02.84 second place finish. The Trojan’s Skyler Nowalk placed third in a time of 1:08.03.
Heading into the longer race of the night; the 500 yard freestyle, Mikayla Sastri placed first for Norwich timing 6:42.99, Olivia Ketzak placed second for Greene in the event with a time of 7:32.17 with NHS’ Eva Blenis sticking only .65 ticks of a second behind for a third place finish.
The Tornado would take home first and second place in the 200 yard freestyle relay with the quartet of Angela Carlson, Evan Blenis, Adyson Whaley and Tanner Olds finishing first and the crew of Megan Funke, Julia Llewellyn, Regan Finnegan and Abigail Natoli taking second place with each team timing 2:03.71 and 2:06.61 respectively.
Molly Hannan won the 100 yard backstroke for the Tornado in a time of 1:24.47. Meanwhile Michaela Zimmer and Natalie Specht finished second and third in the event for Greene with Zimmer finishing in 1:28.95 and Specht in 1:47.58.
In the 100 yard breaststroke Norwich’s Carlson and Funk would place first and second timing 1:26.84 and 1:38.11 respectively.
In the final event of the night- the 400 yard freestyle relay- the Norwich team of Hansen, Whaley, Carlson and Blaisure placed first in a time of 4:29.32 The other Norwich relay team of Sastri, Blenis, Hannan, and Kman wasn’t far behind as they grabbed a second place finish in a time of 4:47.83.
The Trojan’s squad of Natalie Specht, Michaela Zimmer, Olivia Ketzak and Skyler Nowalk would place third in the 400 yard freestyle relay as they timed 5:32.92.
“It was a good meet to start the season. We wanted to see what our younger girls could do and they shined,” said Norwich Head Coach Saundra Gantt, “We had many best times from all the girls and many were about where they finished last season so that is a good sign. We are excited to see what the rest of the season brings.”
Norwich (0-1) heads back to the pool on Friday March 19th as they travel to take on the Oneonta Yellowjackets with the meet slated to begin at 5:30pm
