Norwich Girls Volleyball advances past S-E
SHERBURNE – Given the current high school athletics landscape where outer sectional competition can be hard to find- fans of quality high school volleyball were treated to a Section III vs Section IV class B match up on Monday March 22nd when the Sherburne-Earlville Marauders girls varsity volleyball team hosted the Norwich Purple Tornado in a matchup of Chenango County foes.
The host Marauders took an early 1-0 set advantage winning the first game 25-18, despite Sherburne-Earlville grabbing the early lead- Norwich ultimately proved victorious on the night winning the next three sets 25-12, 25-21, 25-21 to clinch the match 3-1.
“We didn’t play as well as previous games, [We] had trouble on the serve line” said Norwich Head Coach Shelly Alger, “We played a very good team. (Sherburne-Earlville) served well and play the ball well”
Norwich struggled from the service line as 77% of their serves landed in play. Yet credit the play of the young Purple Tornado as they received big time play from Lauren Squires, Maddy Morris and Miranda Cole. Squires led the team in kills with 13, Morris led NHS with 14 assists and Cole recorded 11 digs to lead Norwich.
“Maddy Morris and Lauren Squires did well and Miranda Cole did well digging for us” added Alger.
Next up on the docket for the Purple Tornado (3-0) is a return to intersectional play as they take on a Section IV volleyball powerhouse; the Owego Indians. Norwich will host Owego tonight with game time slated to begin at 6:30pm.
