Greene field hockey opens with consecutive shutout wins

GREENE – Greene's offense found the mark in the second quarter, and it poured on the offense the rest of the way in a 4-0 victory over Newark Valley Wednesday night.
It was the second straight shutout win for the Trojans (2-0), who, playing under coach Christine Battaglini, opened its season Tuesday night blanking a tough Afton-Harpursville unit, 2-0.
Sarah Sexton found the cage for the opening tally Wednesday at 11:18 of the second quarter getting a helper from Olivia Kennedy.
That goal set up a balanced night of scoring for Greene, who had four different players record goals, and two others notch assists.
Kennedy finished with one goal and one assist netting the Trojans' second goal late in the third quarter. Adding goals for Greene were Emma Rice and Molly Flanagan.
Tuesday, Kylee Peck picked up a goal from Greene as Kennedy added an assist, and Flanagan later scored unassisted.
Greene held a 10-1 shots advantage over A-H, and combined with its 12-1 edge over the Cardinals, hold a 22-2 overall shots advantage on the season.

Norwich doubles up Oxford
OXFORD  - Norwich mounted a 4-1 halftime lead over Oxford, and cruised to a 6-3 girls' soccer victory over the Blackhawks Wednesday night in rainy conditions.
Sydney Coggins had two first-half goals for Norwich, the first coming less than five minutes into the game. Sarah Davis and Taylor McCarthy also tallied for Norwich, which led 3-0 before Kaylin Tefft scored for Oxford.
Davis provided all of the offense for Norwich in the second half scoring two times to complete her first-ever varsity hat trick.
Meanwhile, down 6-1 to Norwich, Tefft scored again for the Blackhawks with 17 minutes left, and Haily Fleury added a goal for Oxford in the final four minutes.
"Oxford controlled the middle of the field for a while, but could not keep up with (our) high-powered front line," said Norwich coach Doug Coggins.

Oxford beats Walton in four games
OXFORD - Oxford's volleyball team shook off a tough second set to outlast Walton in four sets Tuesday beating the Warriors, 25-11, 25-27, 25-17, 25-16.
The victory came in the Blackhawks' season-opener, and the winning club was let by Mallory Olsen-Nicnols' all-around performance in each facet of the game.
Olsen-Nichols led or shared the team-high in aces, kills, and assists finishing with six, eight, and 17 respectively.
Madalyn Barrows also had eight kills, and Daysha Simpson picked up 11 assists.
Oxford plays at Delhi Thursday.

GREENE - Last Friday, Unadilla Valley's volleyball team began its season with a three-set sweep on the road beating host Greene, 25-16, 25-6, 25-9.
The Storm found great success from the service line, led by Hudson Lyons and Shannon Lloyd.
Lyons served up 11 aces on the night, while Lloyd came away with eight unreturned serves. "UV had the upper hand with strong, consistent serving, and excellent ball placement," said Greene coach Shelbe Furman. "(We) struggled to serve receive, but started becoming more aggressive late in sets."
Lyons chipped in with a team-high five assists, and came up with three digs.
