The streak continues; SV downs Tornado 39-6

NORWICH – The longest active win streak in New York State high school football continues.
The reigning ‘Class C’ State Champ SV Sabers’ continued their win streak-clinching their 28th straight win with a dominant second-half performance over the Purple Tornado at Ulrich Field on Friday night.
With the high-wind weather conditions at kick-off grounded the high powered Sus Valley offense led by their 2019 ‘Class C’ player of the year- standout quarterback Logan Haskell.
The windy weather played in favor for the Purple Tornado defense as attempts at break out offensive plays were simply out of the question for the Sabers early offensive series.
Despite Haskell being unable to utilize his premier passing ability- the Sabers called upon their plethora of offensive weapons- Anthony Dominguez, Ryan Rychlewski, Brendan Hoffman, and Scott Howard to lead their running attack…and they never broke stride.
Dominguez broke ground in the first quarter for the Sabers with a seven yard touchdown run at 8:19 to put the reigning state champs ahead 6-0.
Not to be out done, Norwich’s offense got right back in motion when Norwich senior quarterback Griffin Mills scrambled out of the pocket- breaking free of a couple SV defenders, scampering in unblemished into the end zone to knot the game at six points apiece for the Tornado with just under five minutes to play in the first period. With the game tied heading into the second quarter, momentum was building for an early season upset of a highly ranked opponent for a hungry Purple Tornado team.
“When you play a team as good and has had the success that Sus Valley has had the last couple years, the first quarter is really indicative of are you going to have confidence or not…and I think we gained a lot of confidence in the first quarter” said Norwich Head Coach Mike Chrystie.
The second quarter was when the ‘wind’ truly changed in SV’s favor as Haskell’s passing game and timely plays by Dominquez, Dominguez, and Rychlewski opened up the field for the Sabers.
“Anytime you have, four, five or six guys that all have explosive capabilities its tough” added Chrystie on defending the SV offensive unit.
Haskell broke the tie between the two teams with a four yard TD run- followed up by a successful two-point conversation via a run by Brandon Hoffman-as SV led with 6:08 to play in the first half.
Later in the quarter- Norwich regained possession of the football after a strong defensive series by the Tornado after SV intercepted a pass by NHS’ Mills. With Norwich offense surging at the 50 yard line with 37.1 seconds left to go- Mills hit Carson Thornton for a five yard gain, just before disaster struck for the Purple Tornado as quarterback Griffin Mills suffered an injury just before the half and would not return to the ballgame.
With their offensive leader out of the game, Norwich’s third quarter offense faltered. NHS proceeded to fumble the ball on two of their three possessions coming out of the halftime break, and SV would make those offensive miscues by the Purple hurt.
“We had some ball security issues the ball just touched the ground too much and when you lose the turnover battle…it’s tough to overcome that… and we just weren’t able to overcome that tonight” added Chrystie.
Brandon Hoffman found the end zone at 9:17 in the third period to extend SV’s lead 20-6 and then SV would strike again with a fumble recovery with 4:35 left in the quarter. The Saber’s Scott Howard capitalized on the open field and had a 58 yard TD run to put SV ahead 26-6.
“Going into halftime, one score game, we just weren’t able to overcome the adjustments we needed to make once Griff (Mills) went down” said Chrystie on Norwich’s second-half offense.
SV’s Hoffman and Shane Cook both found the end zone again, with Cook scoring on a 40 yard TD run to close-out the Saber’s win 39-6.
After the game, Norwich Coach Mike Chrystie talked to his team about what they’re focused on next; learning from this loss and moving ahead to prepare for their game next week against Bainbridge-Guilford.
“We’ve got to regroup, I told them it’s about adversity….and usually after your first loss you figure out what kind of team you have…I like this group they work hard, they play hard, they play for each other and I anticipate us having a good bounce back week” said Chrystie.
Norwich (1-1) returns to the gridiron when they travel to take on Bainbridge-Guilford on Saturday, April 3rd at Bainbridge-Guilford High School with kick-off slated for 1:30.
