Greene avenges week one loss to Storm
NEW BERLIN – Coming off a two-week layoff due to a canceled game, Greene’s football team was as sharp on offense as it has been all season.
The Trojans avenged an opening-game loss to Unadilla Valley scoring two touchdowns in each of the first three quarters in a 48-22 victory over the Storm on Friday night.
“Greene has gotten better since we played them, and they had a good game plan for us,” said UV head coach Art Rigas.
One of those plans of attack was to get Greene running back Tristan Austin in space.
Austin rushed for 142 yards and three touchdowns, and he added a 60-yard TD reception from Trojans quarterback Josh Titus.
Overall, Austin accounted for 242 yards rushing and receiving.
“What hurt us the most was Austin,” Rigas said. “When he was at tailback, at least he had to run through people first. When he caught the ball out of the backfield, if you didn’t have someone on him right away, you might not tackle him.”
UV was not without its offensive success.
Blaine Rifanburg, in just his second start at quarterback, ran for 181 yards and two touchdowns.
Rifanburg’s 58-yard TD run in the first quarter briefly had UV in front 8-0.
“We were predominantly a triple-option team, and Kyler (Butts) ran that offense as a 10th- and 11th-grader,” Rigas said. “(After Kyler got hurt), Blaine stepped in. No one can learn the triple option in two weeks, but we’re accentuating what (our athletes) do well, and we’re getting there on offense.”
Greene quarterback, Josh Titus, finished 5-for-6 for 200 yards and two TD passes, and he added an 11-yard TD run in the first half as the Trojans built a 28-16 halftime lead.
Damien Hitt caught a 36-yard TD strike from Titus, and Greene defender Tyler Brown returned a fumble for a touchdown to cap Greene’s scoring.
UV’s Marcus Proskine added a seven-yard TD run late in the game.
