Norwich Girls Soccer falls short at Oneonta
ONEONTA - After leading for the first half of the game, the Norwich Purple Tornado girls’ varsity soccer team dropped a game on the road against the rival Oneonta Yellowjackets by a score of 7-3 on Monday night.
Sydney Coggins was responsible for the Tornado’s first goal of the game and teammate Sarah Davis scored by crashing the goal later in the opening half to put Norwich up 2-1. Coggins would later score NHS’ third goal of the contest in the second half of play.
The Yellowjackets seven goals on the night were well earned as they shot 20 times on the Tornado net, and the Norwich defense held strong against Oneonta offensive onslaught for the first 60 minutes of play.
Heading into the final 20 minutes to play, Norwich stayed within striking range of the Yellowjackets- as the Tornado trailed 4-3. That’s when everything changed and turned in favor Oneonta, as they proceeded to score three straight goals.
“Our defense started to allow more space and not keep tight to their assigned player” said Coggins on what Oneonta’s offense took advantage of over the final 20 minute span.
Notably, Norwich also lost two of their starting midfielders; Maddie Stafford and Elli Ryan to injury during the first half and neither would return to the game.
Norwich (5-2) will need to have a short memory as they have a quick turnaround and return to the field tonight when they travel down route 12 to take on the Seton Catholic Central Saints with game time slated for 5:00pm.
