Strong second-half leads Tornado past Marauders
SHERBURNE – On a wet and rainy day in the Southern Tier the boys’ varsity soccer teams of Sherburne-Earlville and Norwich competed in an intercounty matchup on Thursday April 15, with Norwich taking home the winning nod by a final score of 5-3.
Norwich rebounded to find their winning ways, after back-to-back losses earlier in the week from Seton Catholic and Oneonta. The difference maker in Thursday afternoon’s game in comparison to the Tornado’s earlier games was that they found their offensive groove early in the contest.
Norwich senior Andrew Mullen scored off a header, and soon after NHS teammate Gehrig Sastri found the back of the net to put the Tornado on top 2-0 early in the first half. The Marauders managed to fight back and found offensive success later in the half with back-to-back goals from S-E captains Brogan Winton and Andrew Fern; knotting the match at the half with both clubs scoring two goals apiece.
Norwich’s Nick Ragonese broke the stalemate only thirty seconds into the second half as his aggressive defensive style led to an instant impactful goal that put NHS up for good. Braydon Hippenstiel and Andrew Mullen sealed the deal for good as the duo tacked on two extra goals for Norwich, extending the lead to 5-2.
Sherburne-Earlville’s Dan Stanton scored with just over ten minutes to play made for an anxious final few minutes, however Norwich held onto win by a final score of 5-3.
Norwich returns to the pitch on Monday April 19 when they travel to play Owego with game-time scheduled for 5:30pm.
The Marauders return to the field on Saturday April 17th when they host Remsen with kick-off slated for 11:00.
