NHS swats Yellowjackets in girls volleyball
ONEONTA – In a rematch of their second match of the year, the Norwich Purple Tornado girls’ varsity volleyball team defeated the Oneonta Yellowjackets on Thursday April 15th for the second time on the year; this time in straight sets.
Despite a downturn in their play from the service line, with NHS serving just under 80 percent of their serves inbounds, Norwich managed to rally to victory. This victory like many the Tornado have had this season was defined by consistent standout and timely play by the Purple Tornado.
Three different Norwich athletes recorded double-digits to lead the team in at least one statistical category. Sammi Taylor landed 11 digs, Lauren Squires added 13 kills and Madisyn Ryan tossed out 10 assists. Norwich’s Maddy Morris contributed nine assists, Marissa Ramey added in nine kills and Willow Swingle pitched in eight digs.
“I am so proud of our team” said Norwich Head Coach Shelly Alger, “Last night we had a starter sprain her ankle so we had to make some changes and these girls pulled it out. They all had a job to do and they did it! [Our] Serve was off but managed to offensively handle the game.”
Norwich (7-3) returns to the hardwood on Tuesday April 20th when they travel to play the Section IV standout Owego Indians, with game time scheduled for 7:00pm.
