Police charge suspect with assault and weapon possession

NORWICH – Law enforcement located and charged a man with felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon on Monday.

According to New York State Police Troop C Public Information Officer Aga Dembinska, Jose I. Gonzalez, 53, of Norwich was charged with second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, along with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

While the weapon involved in the incident has yet to be identified by law enforcement, police originally referred to the situation as an assault with a sharp object.

The arrest occurred after on April 14, 2021 around 10 a.m., New York State Police at Norwich responded to a domestic related incident involving two other people at Fred’s Inn in the Town of Norwich.

“An investigation at the scene revealed that two people were assaulted resulting in minor injuries,” said Dembinska. “Both were taken to Chenango Memorial Hospital by Norwich Fire ambulance and have since been treated and released.”

It was at that time that Dembinska said they were looking to speak with Gonzalez. Not long after Dembinska said a warrant was issued for his arrest, and yesterday he was arrested.
