Greene closes season with massive comeback victory
GREENE – Mark down Greene's victory over Unatego Friday night as the perfect example of playing to the final whistle.
The Trojans' football team completed their four-game season with a terrific comeback victory winning a shootout over the Spartans, 50-48, at George Raymond Field.
After taking a two touchdown lead in the first quarter, Greene (3-1) gave up 34 straight points to the Spartans.
Tori Gue's 98-yard interception return for a touchdown had Unatego in front 34-20 early in the fourth.
Over the final eight-plus minutes, Greene scored 30 points - four touchdowns - including a pair of scores in the last 90 seconds that gave the host team the improbable victory.
"This senior class, they've been involved in some amazing games the past few years," said Greene head coach Dave Gorton. "It seems like every year, we have one great win against a team we shouldn't have beaten. This was another one of those, and those seniors are a huge reason we've had those wins. When you score 30 points the last eight minutes, and come back from two touchdowns down. It's a credit that (the kids) didn't give up. They were exhausted, but they didn't quit."
Greene's victory came in spite of Unatego running back, Leo Temple's, massive day.
Temple scored six touchdowns, and his final score, a five-yard TD run, had the Spartans up 48-34 with less than three minutes to play.
Greene struck quickly scoring the on quarterback Josh Titus' two-yard run. The successful two-point conversion closed the margin to 48-42 with 1:21 to play.
Down to a third-string kicker, Greene turned to leading rusher Tristan Austin to attempt the onside quick.
"It was an amazing kick, and we recovered it at the Unatego 49-yard line," Gorton said of Austin's onside kick.
On the next play from scrimmage, Titus hit receiver Wyatt Ingraham on a 12-yard slant pass. Ingraham ran over one would-be Unatego tackler, and shrugged off a second defender's tackle racing 49 yards tying the game at 48-48.
The Titus-to-Ingraham connection was on the mark again as the successful two-point pass gave the Trojans the margin of victory.
"I can't tell you how much learning and growing the kids did this year," Gorton said. "It's amazing how far they came from game on to the end of the season."
Austin's perfectly executed onside kick was just a small component of his all-around big day.
Austin had four touchdowns - two rushing and two receiving - finishing with 127 yards rushing and 92 yards receiving.
Titus also had two rushing scores, while throwing for 256 yards and three scores.
