Norwich Girls Swimming places third at class championships

ENDWELL – The Norwich Purple Tornado girls varsity swim team headed back to the pool on Saturday April 24th and capped off a stellar ‘Fall 2’ sports season with a strong third place finish at the Section IV Class B Championships on. With a combined 130 seconds worth personal best times recorded on Saturday, the Purple Tornado peaked at the right time.
Norwich scored 313 points in their third place finish, with Chenango Valley scoring 458 for second place and host Maine-Endwell claiming the top spot with 491 points.
“These girls keep climbing the sectional ranks year after year after year without divers” said Norwich head coach Saundra Gantt on her team’s performance.
“Our six senior girls were great leaders to our younger team. Two of those seniors were first year swimmers. We moved a whole modified team of girls up which included a 7th grader and four 8th graders.”
“It was a great season. 34 days of training without meets” added Gantt on the condensed ‘Fall 2’ sports season.
“The girls made the best of it. They worked hard, they swam very well all season.”
In the 200 yard medley relay, Norwich’s team of Abby Hansen, Kaitlyn Blaisure, Nina Kman and Angela Carlson placed third in a time of 1:58.11. The quartet of Hansen, Blaisure, Kman and Carlson all made an encore performance in the 400 yard freestyle relay, placing second in a time of 1:57.15.
Heading into the 200 yard freestyle race, Norwich had four swimmers in the event- Mikayla Sastri, Tanner Olds, Eva Blenis and Megan Funke. Sastri finished fifth in a time of 2:17.35, Olds placed sixth in a time of 2:17.94. Blenis placed 14th in a time of 2:32.33 and Funke swam to a 16th place finish in a time of 2:36.96.
In the 500 yard freestyle event, Sastri and Olds placed fifth and sixth- as Sastri timed 6:13.44 and Olds finished just one second behind her team in 6:14.49.
In the 200 yard intermediate race, Norwich’s Abby Hansen placed fifth in a time of 2:28.16, Nina Kman finished in sixth, timing 2:34.61 and Molly Hannan recorded a time of 3:08.12 on her way to a 14th place finish.
In the 50 yard freestyle, Norwich’s Kaitlyn Blaisure and Angela Carlson finished second and third- timing 25.51 and 25.96 respectively, and Adyson Whaley recorded a 14th place finish with a time of 30.12. Blaisure and Carlson later placed third and fifth respectively in the 100 yard freestyle with Blaisure timing 57.50 and Carlson finishing in 59.30.
Nina Kman placed fifth in the 100 yard butterfly in a time of 1:09.94, Regan Finnegan placed 12th in a time of 1:19.45, Julia Llewellyn timed 1:21.13 for a 13th place finish.
The Norwich quarter of Adyson Whaley, Molly Hannan, Mikayla Sastri and Tanner Olds finished sixth among Section IVs contingent with a time of 2:02.58.
Abby Hansen came within just two seconds of earning the top spot in the 100 yard backstroke, as she recorded a 1:06.10 time in her second place finish. Maine-Endwell’s Aleah Nale won the event in a time of 1:04. 03. Hansen’s Purple Tornado teammates Eva Blenis, Regan Finnegan and Julia Llewellyn all earned 10th, 11th and 12th place finishes to add to Norwich’s point total with Blenis timing 1:16.81, Finnegan 1:16.91 and Llewellyn 1:17.41.
Adyson Whaley and Megan Funke recorded 12th and 13th finishes in the 100 yard breast stroke with Whaley timing 1:29.45 and Funke finishing in 1:31.40.
“Our podium places at sectionals are getting higher up and we are putting more girls on the podium,” said Gantt.
“We are placing three to four girls in semis [semi-finals] and finals in almost every race. Though it was a short season, it’s nice we get to start back up again soon. I think we all look forward to it.”
