Sherburne Pageant of the Bands to be held virtually this year

NORWICH — The much-loved Pageant of the Bands parade usually held in Sherburne will take place online this year.

Sherburne Middle and High School Band Director Joe Roche said rather than holding the in-person event, students will be pre-recording their performances which will be shared on Youtube.

“They’re sending in the performances via Google links, and then we’re going to load those links onto a Youtube platform. What will happen is our website will put on a link the public can click on,” said Roche.

The event will run from Tuesday, June 1 to Saturday June 5, which is slightly longer than the usual three day event.

“We figured we’ll run it for the full school week. People can go on there at their leisure,” said Roche.

Roche stated  that, as a way to add some of the competition usually present at Pageant of the Bands, residents will be asked to “like” their favorite performance on Youtube. At the end of the event points for each performance will be reviewed and a winner will be declared for each section.

“We want them to like which ones are their favorite and then we’re going to tally up the votes so to speak, and then for each section the performance with the most likes will be the winner,” said Roche.

The sections will include small ensembles, jazz bands, colorguard, and more, explained Roche.

Last year Pageant of the Bands was cancelled, and instead organizers put together a virtual history of the event which was posted online. Holding the Pageant of the Bands virtually this year, however, is proving to have a positive impact on students, according to Roche.

“Some of them this is the first all year they’ve got to put something together and perform it for somebody … This is kind of their first public display,” he said. “They’re all fired up.”

Roche stated the Sherburne Fire Department also lended a helping hand in putting this year’s event together. He said the fire department plans to hand out participation plaques to all participating students.

There have also been banners advertising the event hung in Sherburne, which is a usual sight every spring. This year, however, Roche stated they made sure to add the word “virtual” to the signs.

Overall, Roche feels this year’s Pageant of the Bands is “something positive.” He explained that nearly 30 districts said they will be participating, including a drumline from Nashville, TN., and groups from Corning High School, Long Island, Vestal, and more.

“That’s pretty good for tough times,” said Roche. “So, you know, it’s reaching out.”
