County DPW to close road on June 8th for culvert replacement
PHARSALIA – The Chenango County Department of Public Works will close a section of County Road 42 on Tuesday, and officials said they hope the closure will only last a day or two at most.
According to Chenango County Department of Public Works Shawn G. Fry, the reason for the project is a culvert that needs to be replaced due to old age. Fry said a culvert is a pipe that runs under a section of road allowing water to pass through it, preventing road washouts and damage.
He said the project will take place starting on the morning of June 8. He added that the project will require the closure of County Road 42, between New York State Route 23 and Beardsley Road in the Town of Pharsalia, and is expected to take approximately one day to be completed.
“The plan is to shut down 42 for hopefully just one day, that way it hopefully won’t be too much of an inconvenience for people traveling in the area,” said Fry. “This is a replacement project, there’s been a culvert here for years and it’s gotten to the age where it needs to be replaced.”
“The project itself is pretty simple, we’ll dig out the old one and put a new one in its place.”
Fry said local residents will still be allowed to and from their homes during the project, but traveling members of the public are asked to seek alternative routes. He added that one potential route is to take Beardsley Road to Georgewhite Road, and then come back out Center Road to New York State 23.
“We generally don’t list alternative routes out and tell people where they have to travel,” Fry said. “It’s just a simple culvert replacement really, but we try to get the information to them as soon as we can.”
He said in a couple of weeks, there will be another road closure in the Town of Afton, but more details on that project will be released once this one is complete.
“We’ll have another road closure in a couple weeks on County Route 39 in the Town of Afton, and once we get everything planned out for that we’ll put out another announcement,” he added. “I try to give people at least a week's notice and let as many people know as I can ahead of time.”
