NORWICH – After a year of holding back social events due to the pandemic, this year’s junior and senior proms are on for this Saturday, and substance use prevention advocates have a challenge for after prom attendees.

According to Chenango Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and Tobacco Free Chenango Coordinator Jamie Hagenbuch, thanks to dropping COVID-19 numbers prom has returned and now is the time to engage students and help promote substance use free lifestyles.

Hagenbuch said on June 5th the Norwich High School prom will take place after a year hiatus, and during the After Prom Party there will be a contest.

“To help keep them safe, the Chenango Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and Tobacco Free Zone are teaming up to provide a contest at the long-standing Norwich City School After Prom Party called, What I Did Instead NHS,” said Hagenbuch. “Students will take three photos sharing their substance free prom poses.”

“Those who would like to participate are asked to post three photos one before, one during and one after the prom to their social media using the hashtag #WhatIDidInsteadNHS.”

She said prizes for most entertaining, most creative, and most school spirited will be awarded, with the grand prize being an Enchanted Forest experience for one lucky group.

Coordinator of the Drug Free Communities grant for Norwich High School Kyli Anderson said she is excited to offer prizes to youth choosing to stay substance free on prom night.

“Anyone who is at the after party is safe,” said Anderson. “The party provides a fun place for our youth to hang out all night long, with loads of games, food and prizes.”

“We are very lucky to have been invited to participate.”

Anderson said the programs will have a table with giveaways next to the selfie station provided by Live Entertainment and Norwich High School’s After Prom Committee.

Judges from several of the 12 community sectors represented by the Chenango Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition and the Tobacco Free Chenango will review all of the submissions on Monday June 8th, and award prizes that evening.

“This contest, and all of the work done by the two programs is designed to help adults connect to our youth in a positive way, build up their protective factors, and ensure that safe, easily accessible alternatives to substance use are available to our local youth,” said Hagenbuch. “It really does take a village, and we are lucky here in Norwich to have so many great adults looking out for our young adults.”

“This is going to be a great way to celebrate great choices! As a parent of children attending Norwich City Schools, this is very important to me on a personal level as well.”

Hagenbuch said The Tobacco Free Zone is supported by a grant from the New York State Department of Health. She said Drug Free Communities prevention work in Norwich is supported through a grant from the Centers for Disease Control.
