Norwich PD: No danger to public, shooting suspect taken into custody

NORWICH – The City of Norwich Police Department is investigating a Thursday morning shooting along Cortland Street.

Police have not yet named a suspect but said one person was in custody and officers describe the incident as a non-accidental discharge of a firearm.

Norwich Police Chief Rodney Marsh said no one was injured and there was no danger to the public.

“At approximately 11:51 a.m., officers responded to 75 Cortland Street for a Check Welfare Complaint. An individual had called 911 and requested the police. One individual was taken into custody, inside the residence,” reported Marsh.

“The individual did fire a round from a weapon, but no one was struck or injured. Again, the individual is in custody and there is no danger to the community,” he said.

Responding to public concerns and social media posts Norwich City officials also announced there was no danger to the public.

Ward 1 Alderman Matthew Caldwell said police were investigating the incident and had the situation under control.

“There is a lot of incorrect information swirling around out there, we want people to know there is no threat to the public,” said Caldwell.

Police said more information would be disclosed later.
