Chenango County DMV opens back up to the public

NORWICH – The Chenango County DMV has returned to a pre-COVID operation schedule, giving motorists the option of walk-in appointments for the first time in more than a year.
The DMV opened walk-in appointments back up Monday, though still filling phone-in appointments made weeks ago. According to County Clerk Mary Weidman, this will be the norm for the department as it continues to take calls for appointments in addition to walk-ins.
“If somebody calls us and wants an appointment, we’re going to keep slots open so that they can have appointments and those people will have priority,” she said.
Weidman said this new hybrid way of doing things makes the DMV more accessible for people who prefer the appointment schedule as well as those who come in the door.
Chenango County is one of the larger DMV offices still taking appointments. New York State DMV had required an appointment-only schedule during the pandemic, forcing motorists to sometimes wait weeks before filing necessary paperwork.
“We like appointments because people come in prepared, and people like it because they know they’ll be seen when they get here,” said Weidman. “But opening back up will also allow for people to come in and ask questions and actually fill out all the forms they need.”
To make an appointment, people can still call 607-337-1460 or 1461.
