NEW BERLIN - When 14-year-old Cooper Hine sustained serious head injuries in an ATV accident last month, friends and family banded together to help the teen and her family in any way possible.
Those efforts have culminated in an outpouring of support in the New Berlin community and an organized event that will take place at the Unadilla Valley Central School this weekend.
The Cooper Strong 5K will begin at 9 a.m. followed by a fun run/walk at 9:45 Saturday on the grounds of UV Central, where Cooper just graduated middle school. A chicken barbecue and Chinese auction fundraiser to help the Hine family is planned at the South New Berlin Fire Department after the race.
There’s also been ongoing efforts by individuals in the community to show support, many of whom have tied light blue ribbons (Cooper’s favorite color) in front of their homes and businesses. Auto decals reading #HineStrong sold at the village and town offices, NBT Bank, and New York Pizzeria decorate the windows of scores of cars throughout the town.
Many business owners have kicked-in proceeds to help, including Krazy 8 Redemption Center of Mount Upton which has been allocating six cents per can or bottle.
“The entire community is really coming together so strongly and done amazing things to support the Hine family until Cooper can be brought home,” said event coordinator Kelly Anderson. “That’s exactly what Cooper needs right now - love and support from the community. We’re praying for a full recovery.”
Cooper remains in critical but stable condition at SUNY Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse. Emergency rescue workers had the teen airlifted following her June 23 accident off Martin Rd. in New Berlin.
Community members have started a Facebook group, #HineStrong, to share their well-wishes and updates on Cooper’s progress.
“We are so very thankful for the incredible support and love that so many people have showered Cooper and our family with,” Bridget Hine, Cooper’s mother, wrote in a Facebook post earlier this month.
“Every day that we wait, hope and pray is a gift. Every day that the Lord avails Cooper the opportunity to heal is a gift,” she wrote. “Please keep praying! Please do not stop! I promise you that God is hearing our prayers. In our family we climb literal pyramids. It is kind of our thing. Cooper has been climbing the tallest pyramid the past 13 days. She is taking it one disproportionality [sic] tall step at a time. Some days will be harder than others. Some days the steps will not seem as steep. Everyday she climbs is a blessing.”
