NORWICH — The Chenango County Health Department will be holding another vaccine clinic on Saturday, July 31. The free clinic will be held at the former Label Shopper in the South Plaza in Norwich.

Pfizer vaccines will be administered from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., to participants ages 12 and up. Pfizer is a two dose vaccine, so second doses will be scheduled for August 21 at the same location.

Public Health Information Officer Isaiah Sutton said it is still important for residents to get vaccinated, as those who are unvaccinated are at a higher risk for contracting COVID and having negative effects.

"Nationwide it is still the unvaccinated group that is at the highest risk to contract the disease, and have that disease have a severe negative outcome," he said.

Sutton said the Delta variant is also a concern, and practicing good hygiene and getting vaccinated are the key to retaining the normalcy we've achieved since the pandemic began.

"The rapid spread in severity of the Delta variant is a cause for concern, especially for those who are not vaccinated," said Sutton. "It's only if we kind of continue some best practices, you know, to get more folks vaccinated that we can stay ahead of this and continue to operate in the relative normalcy that we can see at the moment."

Chenango County has seen a slower rate in vaccinations recently, compared to when vaccination efforts first began, according to Sutton. As of Tuesday, July 20, only 52.2 percent of the Chenango County population had received at least one COVID vaccine dose.

As of Wednesday, July 21, 59.5 percent of the New York State population has received at least one dose of vaccine, and 54.8 percent have completed the vaccine series.

Sutton also said there has also been a small increase in COVID cases in the area.

"Nationwide they've seen a rise. Locally it's not as pronounced," he said. "But we have seen our seven day average go up a bit."

For those who are unvaccinated, Sutton suggests continuing hand washing, mask wearing, and social distancing.

"Unvaccinated people should continue to wear masks when not able to socially distance, and in public places," he advised. "Everyone should continue best practices, good hand washing, be careful in large crowds, especially if those around you seem ill. You know, be cautious of that kind of thing."

"We cannot stress how important it is that folks continue to get vaccinated," he added.
