NORWICH — The NBT Bank Summer Concert Series began earlier this month, and has drawn massive crowds every week.

"It’s been going fantastic. We’ve had record crowds to start the year. And we had rain for the first week, but we lucked out for the next two," said Chenango Blues Association Event Organizer Eric Larsen.

The weekly shows are made possible by donations from various organizations in the area, according to Larsen.

"We’ve got the great sponsorship. NBT, RC Smith, Greater Norwich, and you know, those folks give us the resources to put on the kind of shows you just don’t see in other communities," he said.

He said the summer concerts are important to the area because it gets people out in the community, as well as draws residents from outside of town.

"It's really is nice to see so many people downtown. And so many people come to the shows from outside the area, I just think that’s great for our whole area. You know, we’re exposing people to the community and they come here and see that it's a vibrant place," said Larsen.

The July 29 performance by Terrance Simien was the fourth show of eight slated for this summer. Concerts will occur every Thursday through the end of August, with the Chenango Blues Fest falling on Friday, August 20, and Saturday, August 21.

Larsen said current COVID restrictions are minimal, with health department recommendations sticking to masking up and socially distancing for unvaccinated individuals.

"Right now we’re going to continue to follow the guidance, so the local health department. And so far that has not changed," explained Larsen. "Right now what we ask is that if you are not vaccinated that you wear a mask and socially distance, for your protection and the protection of your family."

He said due to the large size of the venue, Blues Association officials are confident in their ability to keep visitors safe.

"The good news is we have a very large area. We had already reconfigured the space based on, earlier in the year, when we thought that might be more restrictive than it is now. And so our setup is gonna be very good, there’s gonna be lots of room for people to spread out. And I think we’re gonna be able to accommodate people safely in almost any scenario," Larsen explained.

Tickets for this year's Blues Fest are only available online via Simpletix, Larsen stated, and are $40 per person.

"We plan right now to keep the same ticketing arrangement, tickets have to be purchased in advance although keep in mind that they are sold on an online platform," he said. "You'll be able to buy them up until the week of the festival."
