NORWICH — The Chenango SPCA will be holding the "Paws and Pints" fundraiser this Saturday, August 7, at Hidden Springs Brewhouse in Norwich. The event will run from 1 to 7 p.m., and will be host to bands, a magician, a pet parade, and more.
"Families time is kind of from 1 to 4 [p.m.], and then after that from 4 to 7 [p.m.] will be, we'll have a band," said Chenango SPCA Executive Director Annette Clarke. "We'll have food trucks, Gilligan's will be there with an ice cream truck. And then it's just kind of a way to celebrate the end of the summer."
The fundraiser is to help raise money for the Chenango SPCA, which costs approximately $370,000 per year to run, according to Clarke.
"We're a private organization, we do not receive any funding from the government. So even though we are the Chenango SPCA, the county does not fund us," said Clarke. "It costs us $1,000 a day to run the shelter, and so we have to raise all of that money."
Musicians that will be performing include the Double Knot Duo, Emily Davie, and DJ Jack Rutan. Magician Ryan Bliss from CNY MagicShows will also give a performance from 2 to 4 p.m.
There will also be a pet parade, which Clarke said is for pet owners to "parade them around and show them off."
Paws and Pints is a free event, but SPCA officials ask that visitors provide a donation upon arrival.
"If you're wondering what the admission cost is, that's easy, a donation at the door would be wonderful," said SPCA officials in a Facebook post about the event. "Games, magic, music are at no cost. Food trucks and Gilligan's Ice Cream will be there for you to purchase."
In addition to monetary donations, Clarke said the SPCA is always looking for cleaning supplies to assist in upkeep of the facility.
"Pine Sol, bleach, and paper towels are our main needs that we ask for help with," said Clarke. "Dog and cat food we will certainly accept it, it gets donated back to the public. That's what does our Pet Food Pantry."
The Chenango SPCA is a no-kill shelter, which means they do not euthanize animals based on space needs. This can cause the facility to go over capacity. Clarke said the SPCA currently has 172 cats and 14 dogs. She added that the money raised from Paws and Pints will go toward care for the animals.
"Just to help raise money to help take care of them," she said. "Adoptions have been happening right along, it's just many days we get more than we send out."
The Paws and Pints fundraiser is made possible by Hidden Springs Brewhouse and Oliver's Campers.
"It is sponsored by Oliver's Campers, which we'd like to mention. And Hidden Springs Brewhouse, because they are also donating besides donating the facility there. They've donated to us towards the event," said Clarke.
Staffworks is also helping to fund the event, as they are an "all-year sponsor" of the SPCA, according to Clarke.
"They are an all year sponsor for everything because of their Save a Life foundation, and because they give us so much," Clarke explained.
Clarke said she wants people to know that SPCA workers truly do love the animals that come through the facility, and that they do their best to care for them and find them a loving home.
"We all here love animals. We take good care of them," she said. "Our staff plays with the animals. They not only clean up after them, they cuddle with them. Sometimes we'll have animals running in here, to give them time out of a cage. That we do everything we can to find them a good home. That's what's really important to us, getting them their forever home."
All are welcoming to the upcoming Paws and Pints event. Clarke said to "just come out and have fun. That's all it's really meant to do is come out and enjoy some music, enjoy some games, and help support the animals."
