Purple Heart memorial in the works for East Park

NORWICH - County officials are eyeing East Park as the likely location for a new memorial honoring the Purple Heart recipients of Chenango County.
Joseph Coe, Chenango County veterans’ services officer, pitched the idea to the county’s ag, buildings and grounds committee last month, saying that East Park would be the perfect location because of its lighting, position of the American flag, and high volume of foot traffic.
The memorial is follow-up to a proclamation passed by the county board in May declaring Chenango County as a veterans’ service county. The designation is part of a larger effort to have New York recognized as a Purple Heart state.
“Going forward, we’re looking to have [the memorial] presented in May, Memorial Day, of 2022,” said Coe, adding his original plan to have it presented by Veterans’ Day this year isn’t feasible because of timing and availability of materials.
Designers are now drafting ideas about what should be included. Coe said his thought is to have glossy black stone with the Purple Heart in bronze and the proclamation with the six branches of service etched in the side.
It will not include names, he said, for a simple reason: “We just don’t know how many recipients there are in Chenango County.”
“This is a broad spectrum for those who are families of deceased veterans, and of those who are still alive to be recognized for receiving that Purple Heart.”
Coe is working with the Norwich chapters of the American Legion and the VFW to collect donations, and he plans to have price estimates for county board members later this month. He also hopes to present his plan to the Norwich Common Council once pricing and design ideas are finalized.
