DPW finishes up repaving project

NORWICH — Some City of Norwich streets received some TLC this month, courtesy of the Norwich Department of Public Works (DPW). DPW spent the last few weeks repaving several residential streets in the city.

The project began on August 9. DPW Superintendent Ed Pepe said the repaved streets included Auburn Street, Waite Street from Silver Street to Lee Avenue, West Main Street, River Street, Berry Street from Silver Street to Adams Street, Jones Avenue, South Rowley Avenue, and Rexford Street.

"We are also putting in five new spaces in at the Baker Dog Park, parallel parking spaces," he added. "Those are done, not open yet but they're done."

Repaving wrapped up at the end of last week, and cost an estimated $400,000, according to Pepe.

"This is not an official number," said Pepe. "It depends on exactly how much blacktop we had to put down and things can change a little bit. But it's probably around $400,000."

The repaving project was funded entirely by the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS), according to Pepe. He said, "No local dollars went into it. So state funded CHIPS money."

Street repaving usually occurs in August every year, according to Pepe. He said the DPW sends out notices to residents that will be affected by the repairs, and notices are also posted to Facebook. Luckily, he said this year's repaving project did not cause inconveniences to residents, and that "all streets remained open at all times."

In the works through the Department of Transportation (DOT) is a repaving project focused on Broad Street and Main Street, which Pepe is hopeful will begin in 2022.

"The DOT is repaving Broad Street and Main Street. Exact schedule is to be determined but we've been talking about trying to get it done in 2022," Pepe explained. "The state is using federal dollars for that, so there's no cost to the taxpayer. There's no cost to the local, City of Norwich taxpayer."
