Norwich dominates Johnstown in 46-0 victory on Senior Night
NORWICH- If you were to paint a portrait detailing the Tornado’s 46-0 Friday night home victory over the Johnstown Sir Bills- the canvas would be all purple.
On senior night, Norwich kicked their celebration off in a hurry with a massive offensive attack in the opening quarter. The Tornado immediately used the running game to their advantage as senior quarterback Torin Lawrence ran for a 26 yard touchdown, followed by an Evan Sylstra 15 yard touchdown run later in the period. Capping off NHS’ 21 point quarter was Torin Lawrence’s 50 yard touchdown pass to sophomore receiver Holden Ryan.
A huge proponent of the Purple Tornado’s potent offense was their offensive line as it was very seldom that NHS experienced any defensive pressure from the Sir Bills.
“We knew on film what they (Johnstown) were going to do and no-matter the opponent it comes down to execution. I thought up front we dominated the line of scrimmage tonight and it opened up a lot for us offensively and defensively tonight” said Norwich Head Coach Mike Chrystie.
Not only did the offensive line prove to be a major asset to the Tornado, but Norwich consistently turned defense into offense forcing four Johnstown fumbles as the NHS defensive line never gave the Sir Bill’s quarterback Bryce Mureness a quiet down on the turf throughout the game.
In the second half of play Norwich’s pair of senior running backs Evan Sylstra and Mallachi Gaters cemented their impact on the game as the duo combined for three total touchdowns. Capping off the scoring for the Purple was Brady Smith and his 20 yard run.
“We kind of have a three-headed backfield right now with the success that Torin, Malachi and Evan are having right now,” said Chrystie, “At the same time it all starts up front, but to have different options in the backfield keeps defenses on their heels.”
Mallachi Gaters and Evan Sylstra spearheaded Norwich’s rushing attack. Gaters rushed for 94 yds and 1 touchdown and Sylstra ran for 81 yards while scoring 3 touchdowns.
The Tornado’s Torin Lawrence passed for 65 yards and 1 TD and rushed for 43 yards and 1 TD.
The next challenge on the Tornado’s schedule is the perennial state championship contender Susquehanna Valley Sabers.
“It’s a big week, this is going to be a playoff atmosphere football game. If we want to make the playoffs, winning this game (against Sus Valley) gives us a pretty good chance of entertaining that,” added Chrystie on Norwich’s next game.
The Purple and White are back in action Friday September 17th when they travel to Conklin, NY to play Susquehanna Valley at Sabers Stadium with kick-off slated for 7:30pm.
