Tornado Volleyball set to make a run in ‘21

NORWICH- The Norwich varsity girls volleyball team is prepared to improve upon their 7-4 record from their COVID-19 shortened season from earlier this spring.
Despite the shortened season- the Tornado showed great success on the court playing in numerous matches that were decided by single-digit deficits.
“We are looking forward for a successful season in the STAC league this year. We hope to make it back to sectionals again this year” said Norwich Head Coach Shelly Alger.
Several key returning players include seniors Lauren Squires, Maddy Morris, and Miranda Cole.
The hard hitting Squires is no stranger to finishing plays off for the Purple Tornado as she consistently led the team in kills during the spring season. “Her abilities to attack the ball is fun to watch…but her understanding of the game is top notch” said Alger, “Of course her attacks would not be possible without senior setter, Maddy Morris.”
Morris proved to be the primary facilitator of the Tornado offensive attack back in the spring and is highly capable of finding her teammates anywhere on the floor to deliver some devastating attacks.
Miranda Coles’ play has continued to improve as the Tornado’s outside hitter- having the ability to effectively attack the ball at the 10 foot line is one of the facets of Coles’ game that has set her apart in the Norwich line-up.
Rounding out the NHS line-up is arsenal of returning juniors Madisyn Ryan, Ioana Santos, Kylo Sherman and Nora Thompson, all of which are ready to make an immediate impact to the Tornado squad. Newcomers to the varsity team this year is junior Jesse Little and sophomore Sophie Carnachan.
With a great mixture between seasoned veterans to the team- the Tornado have their eye on improving upon the solid foundation they had built for themselves this past spring and more importantly to play as a singular, cohesive unit on offensive, defense and in-between.
“All games are important for us for we are facing a very strong STAC volleyball league, so every team we play is a rival,” said Alger. “Our strength this year is that we work well together as a team, and we all want the same success.”
