Greene wins Monday afternoon football matchup with Whitney Point
WHITNEY POINT - Coming off an emotional division title-winning performance last Wednesday, Greene overcame a series of turnovers to escape with a 20-18 victory over Whitney Point on Monday afternoon.
Hunter Page scored on a 35-yard TD dash in the fourth quarter to give Greene the lead for good.
Greene lost three fumbles in the third quarter alone, but still managed to keep Whitney Point off the board.
“The kids have lot of courage,” said Greene coach Dave Gorton “I’ve been around teams in the past that if it was difficult like this, the kids didn’t respond. These kids meet the pressure head on, even when things aren’t going well. Credit to the kids that they’ve managed to continue to play hard, even when things aren’t going well.”
Whitney Point led 18-12 at halftime, but Greene hung close thanks to a 35-yard Bill Dunlap TD run, and Lyric Libbey’s six-yard interception return for a score.
Greene tacked on two points to its ledger in the third quarter, despite the three turnovers.
Libbey and David Orlando record a sack in the end zone to close the margin to 18-14.
After Page’s touchdown run, Greene’s defense picked up a stop with seven minutes remaining.
The Trojans (6-0) held the ball the rest of the game picking up four first downs along the way. Jaden Eroshevich extended the drive with a big 11-yard first-down run in a third-and-10 situation.
“It was nice to get some great blocking and great production in the running game,” Gorton said. “We ran the ball well the whole second half, and that was the difference in the game.”
Green hosts Thomas A. Edison on Friday.
