Soccer: Greene soccer drops overtime heartbreaker to Cooperstown
ONEONTA - Greene’s first state tournament appearance in 30 years ended in similar fashion to previous years’ playoff runs.
Facing Section III champion Cooperstown in the Class C boys’ soccer regionals, the Hawkeyes advanced with the overtime golden goal defeating the Trojans, 2-1, at Wright National Soccer Campus on Saturday.
Cooperstown’s Lucas Gardner-Olsen took advantage of a big scoring opportunity, and tallied unassisted with 3:20 remaining in the first overtime period.
“Our team had the larger portion of possession and game control,” said Greene coach Rick Tallman. “Unfortunately, we could not get a second finish….In overtime, we again had the better side of game control; however, one opportunity, and Cooperstown capitalized on it. They are a quick, talented group.”
After a scoreless opening 40 minutes, Cooperstown broke the scoreless tie in the 46th minute, when, Liam Spencer scored unassisted.
Greene (16-3) scored the equalizer nine minutes later when Liam Flanagan connected on a 20-yard driving shot into the upper corner.
Statistically, the game was a evenly matched a game as Greene has had in some time with the Trojans holding the slight 11-7 advantage in shots on goal, and a 7-3 edge in cornerkicks.
“I’m very proud of our boys,” Tallman said. “They accomplished more than most thought they could. Although our season and title run came to an end, I walked away with nothing but pride and admiration for these young men.”
