Volleyball: Norwich’s bid for first sectional title falls short
CORNING - Norwich’s rubber match with Owego - with a sectional title on the line - went in favor of the Indians.
The Indians, a perennial contender for Section IV volleyball championships, turned back Norwich’s bid for a first-ever Section IV title winning the Class B title game on Saturday in three sets, 25-15, 25-18, 26-24.
The two clubs could not have been more evenly matched heading into the finals.
Owego won initial meeting - Norwich’s season-opener - in four sets, but the Purple Tornado returned the favor 3 1/2 weeks later defeating the Indians in four sets as well.
Then, in Class B pool play finals on Thursday, the two clubs split their two sets en route to a finals appearance.
Each club claimed five sets apiece, so the finals matchup was clearly an aberration from what transpired earlier in the season.
“Our team fell short on Saturday; however, we can’t dwell on our loss,” said Norwich coach Shelly Alger. “What we need to focus on is what we gained. This team won (Norwich’s) first-ever STAC divisional championship. I’m very proud of this team.”
In the loss, Norwich’s Lauren Squires capped an outstanding season from the hitter position leading with 13 kills, while setter Maddy Morris picked up 11 assists.
