Track and Field State Qualifiers wrap up final day

UNION-ENDICOTT – Chenango County athletes finished strong in the 2022 track and field state qualifiers on Thursday for the second and final day. For the boys, Norwich finished in 13th place with 15 points, Unadilla Valley in 19th place with 8 points, and Oxford in 24th place with 1.50 points. Oxford finished in 16th place for the girls while UV tied for 17th place and Norwich in 22nd place with 11 points.
To conclude day one, UV’s Ben Gorrell finished third in the boys' 400 meter hurdles with a time of 59.54 seconds. Norwich’s Gabe Decker came in eighth (1:03.52).
In the boys long jump, Norwich’s Lucas Craddock picked up two points with a fifth place finish (19-3) while teammate Anthony Ragonese finished eighth (18-7.50). For the girls, UV’s Jaiden Schrag earned fourth with a jump of 15-9.50 and Abby Denz of Oxford took ninth (15-.75).
Milla Gonzalez led Oxford in day two of the event, coming in second for the girls 100 meter dash with a time of 12.69 seconds behind the leader’s 12.46. Norwich’s Holden Ryan came in fifth for the boys (11.73 seconds).
Gonzalez was also a part of the girls 4x100 relay with teammates Hailey Fleury, Taylor Smith, and Abby Denz. The Oxford team took third place with a time of 51.98 seconds.
The Norwich boys 4x800 relay finished third as well. The team of Nolan Reid, Makaio Sutton, Zander Sutton, and Caden Sutton qualified for the championship after a time of 8:26.52.
Unadilla Valley’s Ben Gorrell finished fifth in the boys 110 meter hurdles while classmate Jaiden Schrag placed sixth in the girls 100 meter hurdles.
In the girls triple jump event, Oxford’s Abby Denz came in sixth with a jump of 33-5, picking up one point. Norwich’s Lucas Craddock finished in ninth for the boys (39-11.50).
Olivia Schiraldi achieved 10th place in the high jump for Norwich in a 4-way tie of 4-9.
Norwich’s Lexi Slate came in sixth place for discus with a throw of 101-3 as Shakira Alexander finished ninth (92-4).
Good luck to everyone competing in the NYSPHSAA Championship that will take place on June 10-11 at Cicero-North Syracuse High School.
