NORWICH – One of the points of pride of the historic Evergreen Cemetery in White Store is the presence within its borders of marked burials for at least 17 Revolutionary soldiers.
That number is more than any other cemetery of comparable size in this area.
To honor their service a roadside historic marker was dedicated and installed as part of the William G. Pomeroy Foundation and Empire State Society Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Patriot Burials Program.
The event was on November 6, at the Evergreen Cemetery on White Store Road in Norwich.
The Patriot Burials Marker Program, funded by the William G. Pomeroy Foundation, is a special historic marker series commemorating patriots who fought in or were involved with the struggle for American independence and who are interred in New York State.
Members of the SAR’s Binghamton Chapter will participate in the event. There will be speakers, a color guard, a three-volley salute, a bugler to play taps and a display of period flags at the event. In addition, Evergreen Cemetery is to be honored at the event by the presentation of the Central New York State Network Certificate of Excellence.
The cemetery is located at the junction of State Route 8 and White Store Road, 4 miles south of South New Berlin and 4.5 miles north of Mount Upton in the Town of Norwich, Chenango County, New York.
