GREENE – It wasn’t easy, but the Greene Trojans continue to prove themselves a strong second half team after defeating Unadilla Valley 47-31. The Trojans scored a total of 27 points in the final 16 minutes to earn their 14th straight win of the season.
Both teams came out to play in the first half, where Greene struggled in the second quarter alone being outscored 12-3. This allowed UV to take a one-point lead (21-20) at halftime. No stranger to this type of scenario, Greene responded perfectly as they’ve done all season.
Greene went out for the third quarter with the same intensity as they had in the first quarter and remained consistent through the final eight minutes of regulation. Both teams pressured heavily on defense and it was up to the offense to overcome the stalemate – and Greene’s did just that.
Greene’s Payton Yahner posted an overall best of 24 points with her best quarters coming in the first and in the third. She scored 11 points in the first half. She also went to the free-throw line six times, especially after getting fouled while going up and making the basket. She made six-of-10 free-throws received.
Abby Yahner finished with eight points and played tremendously on defense, along with Claire Flanagan, Josie Dutcher, and Cassie Butler who all had a hand with either blocks or steals. UV’s Jaiden Schrag had 10 points, including one three-point shot in the second quarter that helped set up a halftime lead.
