April 28 proclaimed as Arbor Day
NORWICH — City of Norwich Mayor Brian Doliver proclaimed April 28 as Arbor Day in the City of Norwich during Wednesday's common council meeting.
Arbor Day was first observed in 1872, with the planting of over a million trees in Nebraska. Since then, Arbor Day has become a nationwide celebration each April.
"Trees can reduce the erosion of our precious topsoil and cut heating and cooling costs, monitor the temperature, clean the air, produce oxygen, and provide habitat for wildlife," read Doliver. "Trees are a renewable resource giving us paper and fuel and other products. And whereas trees in our city increase property values, enhance the economic vitality of business areas, beautify our community, and are a source of joy."
An Arbor Day celebration was held this morning at 8 a.m. at the United Church of Christ in Norwich.
