NORWICH – The Norwich Purple Tornado softball team’s offense pushed through to pick up the first win of the season 9-8 against Marathon. In Friday’s final home game Norwich trailed 7-2 before scoring four runs in the fifth inning, one run in the sixth, and two final runs in the seventh on 13 hits.
Norwich also held Marathon in the sixth inning to score one run in the sixth, but their opponent went ahead 8-7 in the top of the seventh inning. Norwich tied it up and won it as Andrea Alvarez’s bloop single sailed over the pitcher’s head to drive in the game-winning run.
Norwich’s offense was led by Loralee Brown and Ava Cirigliano who both provided three hits in four plate appearances. Brown had an inside the park home run in the third inning while Cirigliano smacked a double and drove in a run. Maddy Quattrocchi led the team with two RBIs and had two hits in the win, including a double as well.
On the mound, Sophomore Caitlin Wetterhahn earned her first varsity win as she pitched a complete game. She struck out five batters and was only charged with one earned run (eight unearned) in the win.
Norwich looks to bring their confidence into this afternoon’s final matchup of the season against Johnson City at 5:30 p.m.
